Italian Meatballs in a Rich Tomato and Mozzarella Sauce
This is my easy Italian meatballs in a rich tomato and mozzarella sauce recipe. You can of course use any meat as you prefer in this recipe and you can add less spices or herbs it you wish to suit everyone in your family. You can also use spaghetti or your favourite pasta. I have seasoned the meatballs with the right spices making it less spicy but very flavourful. I think this Italian meatballs recipe will be your favourite dish.
Ingredients
500g minced meat of your choice
2 medium white onions
2 medium red onions
2 carrots diced
Fresh beans a handful diced
1/2 yellow pepper diced
1 large tomato diced
1/2 small aubergine diced
5 clove garlic chopped
2 fresh chillies sliced (optional)
Fresh basil leaves
1 tablespoon tomato purée
Salt to taste
500g tomato passata
2x Mozzarella
For the spices for the sauce
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon Kashmiri powder (mild) for colour
For the spices for the mince meat
1/2 teaspoon chilliflakes (optional)
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
50mls water
2 tablespoon cooking oil, I used olive oil, you can use any oil you prefer
Extra cheese to sprinkle over the sauce before serving up.
Method
1. In a clean bowl put your minced meat in and add all the spices for the meat. Give it a good mix.
2. Next roll your meat into small meatballs.
3. In a frying pan pour your oil and shallow fry your meatballs until lightly golden brown and set aside.
4. Now add your onions and garlic in and start to sauté, until golden brown.
5. Once your onions and garlic are golden brown add your vegetables carrots, beans, yellow pepper, tomato and aubergine.
6. Stir and add your water and cover with a lid and allow to cook the vegetables.
7. After 10 minutes add your fresh chillies if using Kashmiri chilli powder, oregano salt, then add your tomato purée, passata. Give this a stir and then cover with a lid and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
8. Remove the lid and add your fresh basil then give it a stir.
9. Now add your mozzarella to the sauce and give this a stir.
10. Once the mozzarella has melted add your meatballs and give it another stir covering your meatballs with the rich sauce.
11. Add some more fresh basil leaves and give it a final stir.
12. Your Italian meatballs in a rich tomato and mozzarella sauce is ready to serve with your favourite pasta. I have serve this with my homemade garlic bread and a fresh salad.
