Chinese Spare Ribs

This is my own Chinese spare rib recipe. I have had so many requests to make Chinese spare ribs so here it is. My Chinese spare ribs are crispy, fall off the bone moist, sweet and sticky with added spices, giving you that authentic Chinese spare rib flavour. There are just two cooking process to this recipe, first cook ribs in a pan which releases all the flavour, then finally oven bake, to get that char grilled effect. It’s a must try recipe. It’s so delicious you’ll thank me later, once you tried this at home. (There is no alcohol in this recipe).

Chinese Spare Ribs

Chinese Spare Ribs

Ingredients

1kg ribs (meat of your choice)

1 tablespoon dark soy sauce

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

1 tablespoon honey

1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce

1 red fresh chillies chopped

5 cloves garlic chopped

3 spring onions sliced

1 red onion sliced

1 tablespoon fresh ginger

1 teaspoon five spice powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon chilli powder

30mls oil

1 teaspoon Szechuan pepper

4 star anise

1/2 teaspoon red food colouring

Extra oil for the baking tray

Method

1. Put your ribs into a clean bowl, then add all your ingredients in, then marinate overnight.

2. After the ribs have been marinated over night. Put the ribs and marinade into a big pan and cook for about 45 to 50 minutes covered, stir the ribs time to time. Please do not throw away the boiled sticky sauce, leave this to coat the ribs later.

3. After 45 to 50 minutes place the ribs onto a baking tray lined with foil. Pour a bit of oil on the baking tray, so that the ribs don’t stick. The foil will save you time to clean the baking tray after. Bake the ribs for about 15 to 20 minutes. Bake in oven at 160c (Fan) Gas Mark 3.

4. (Be careful at this point, the spare ribs could burn easily, if you don’t keep an eye on them)

5. If you go back to the pan the ribs where cooking in, the marinade will go sticky use this marinade to coat the ribs, then serve the ribs on a plate.

Your Chinese ribs are done, serve them with noodles, chips, potatoes or eat them on its own, your choice.

Enjoy!
